Linear FunctionsWhat Is a Straight Line?

Reading time: ~10 min

A straight line is the simplest function in mathematics: every step you take sideways changes the height by the same fixed amount. We can capture any straight line with a single equation,

y = mx + c

where m is the slope (how steep the line is) and c is the y-intercept (where the line crosses the vertical axis). This marriage of algebra and geometry reaches back to al-Khwarizmi, whose work gave algebra its name, and to Descartes, who first plotted equations on a grid.

Key idea

Change m and the line tilts. Change c and the line slides up or down. Two numbers describe infinitely many lines.

Every letter in y = mx + c has a job. The number multiplying the independent variable x is the slope; the number on its own is the intercept.

If a line has equation y = 3x + 2, then its slope is and it crosses the y-axis at height .

A line with a bigger slope is .

Watch out

The slope is the number multiplying x, not the first number you see. In y = 5 + 4x the slope is still 4.

Which of these equations is not a straight line?

y = 4x - 1
y = 7
x = y squared plus 2
y = x over 2

Which equation has the steepest slope?

(A) y = 2x + 1

(B) y = 5x - 3

(C) y = \tfrac{1}{2}x + 4
